Ben Sumner – Gearing up for a triumphant season

Ben_in_race_modeAs huge cycling fans, Gener8 Finance are pleased to announce that we are sponsoring one of the country’s leading Cyclo-Cross riders, Ben Sumner for the 2015/16 season.

Cyclo-Cross is already extremely popular in Europe, as both a participation and spectator sport, and is rapidly gaining popularity in this country. It is very different to traditional road and track racing, and involves riding over a variety of terrains, including fields and tracks, with competitors having to dismount and carry their bikes over obstacles.

Oxfordshire-based Ben (pictured right), 21, is the reigning under 23 Trophy Series champion, a title he also won in 2014. In addition, he won his third consecutive bronze medal in the under-23 category at the British National Cyclo-Cross Championships in 2015.

Ben’s Under-23 category success was also enough to see him come 3rd in the National Trophy Elite Men’s Series – we are confident that he is heading for greatness, and at Gener8 we are proud to be supporting him all the way.

Ben rides for the Beeline Bicycles Cyclo-Cross team, which is owned by Beeline Bicycles, Oxford’s leading cycle retailer (www.beelinebicycles.co.uk). The Beeline team is a huge supporter of up-and-coming cyclists in the U.K. and has a stable of talented young riders.

Beeline_Homepage_logo_x1sizeThe cycling season begins again in October, and will see Ben compete in the Round 1 of the National Trophy series in Southampton, on the 11th. His main goal this year is to focus on the National Trophy, and win the yellow jersey!

Pre-season training is going well, with Ben recently competing in the Eastern Cyclo-Cross League (www.easterncross.org.uk/race15-16-1.htm) at Basildon Sporting Village in Essex, which he won comfortably, beating the 2nd placed rider by a full 1 minute 20 seconds!

Invoice Finance restrictions on contracts to be outlawed from early next year

Minister for Small Business, Anna Soubry (pictured left) has announced that, from early next year, clauses in commercial contracts that obstruct the use of invoice finance (including “ban on assignment” clauses) will be outlawed.

This move is a direct result of the government’s crackdown on Britain’s late payment culture, after it was estimated that British businesses are owed approximately £26.8 billion in overdue payments – a figure that is set to rise.

For some businesses, invoices are the only assets against which they can borrow and larger firms especially can use restrictions in their terms and conditions to prevent supplier invoices being financed. This leads to delayed payments, and cash-flow difficulties for many SMEs.

Jeff Longhurst, chief executive of the Asset Based Finance Association said: ‘This is good news for UK businesses. Invoice finance is a key source of funding for SMEs in particular, and taking effective action against bans on the assignment of invoices will allow more businesses to unlock the funding tied up in their unpaid invoices.”

The Government has consulted a wide range of interested parties on this subject, including business owners, trade associations, lenders, academics and legal practitioners, and this change in the law is the result of feedback received.

A summary of the changes is as follows:

  • Apply to business to business contracts only (and not business to consumer contracts).
  • Extend to all businesses, regardless of size.
  • Exclude financial services contracts.
  • Exclude contracts with interests in land.
  • Do not create any special provisions for supply chain finance arrangements. This will allow suppliers to opt into supply chain financing agreements or seek alternative arrangements with other invoice financers.
  • Begin from commencement of the regulations – changes will not be retrospectively enforced.
  • Only apply where the parties conduct a business to business transaction under English law and one of them carries on business within the UK.

The Government hopes that by implementing these changes, it will directly benefit smaller businesses and reduce the abuse of position that some larger companies have exerted in the past. It is also hoped that it will contribute to making the UK a more attractive place to start and grow a business without fear of cash-flow issues or access to needed funds.

HMRC announces mandatory changes to ‘Time to Pay’ arrangements

HMRC have announced that from 3rd August 2015, it will be mandatory for all Time to Pay (TTP) arrangements to be collected by direct debit.

HMRC_logoTTP arrangements allow selected businesses, who cannot pay their tax bill on the due date, to pay the balance in instalments, over a period that they can afford, ultimately helping many businesses cope with short term cash-flow problems. Arrangements are tailored to the ability of the customer to pay and are typically for a few months, although can be longer. The granting of TTPs are decided selectively, on a case by case basis, by HMRC.

As part of a review of the service, HMRC are now insisting that all new TTP instalments are paid by Direct Debit, stating the following reasons:

  • Direct Debit is a more cost effective and secure method of payment.
  • It removes the chance that the customer will forget to make payment.
  • Payments are more likely to be correctly allocated by HMRC.
  • Reduces the need for subsequent customer contact, saving time for the customer and HMRC.
  • Direct Debit scheme includes a guarantee to protect the customer.

For those business not able to make payments by Direct Debit facilities, i.e where a bank account will not allow it, then other payment methods may be agreed upon with HMRC, on an exceptional basis.

Existing TTP agreements will not be affected by the new changes.

We will find out how we got on in our category at the awards ceremony on 21st October 2015 at the Hilton Park Lane Hotel in London.

Pushing up, to kick Cancer

Ian Wedge, Gener8’s Regional Sales Director, mingled with local business people at a Barclays networking event on 22nd July, in bustling Bournemouth.

Besides being able to get his hands on the Barclays Premier League trophy in all its glory, Ian was able to meet local Bournemouth business people, including Leon Warner, a Group Leader with Utility Warehouse (www.leonwarner.com).

Leon explained all about his current fundraising efforts in aid of Lewis-Manning Hospice (www.lewis-manning.co.uk), a charity also close to Ian’s heart.

Lewis-Manning Hospice is a voluntary organisation located in Poole, that offers free specialist palliative nursing care to around 700 local people each year living with       cancer and other life-limiting illnesses.

Ian says, “I really enjoyed the event and meeting Leon. It was great to shake his hand in front of the famous Barclays Premier League Trophy and to hear all about how he is fundraising. I am also excited because my team AFC Bournemouth will be contesting the Barclays Premier League trophy this coming season, alongside the likes of the current holders Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United.”

Leon is looking to raise £1,000 for the charity by performing a ‘daily press up challenge’.

Starting on day one, by doing 1 push-up, Leon aims to achieve his goal by adding 1 extra push up every day. With a goal of 200 and currently on 84 push ups, Leon is set to achieve his target!

Inspired by his effort, Ian pledged £100 to Leon on behalf of Lewis-Manning, when he reaches the halfway 100 push-up mark.

Cycling for SeeSaw

On Sunday 14th June David and Paul took on a 140km ride in the Velothon Wales race.

Alongside, 15,000 other riders, Dave and Paul began their journey at the heart of Cardiff and embarked on a road cycle route that showed them some of Wales’ most breath-taking scenery.

seesawAs a congratulations to both on their efforts, and as a ‘well done’, Gener8 have donated £500 each to SeeSaw, a local Oxford charity.

SeeSaw provides vital support to hundreds of children yearly, who are bereaved, or are in the unfortunate process of being bereaved. SeeSaw is currently celebrating its 15th anniversary, and has to date, supported over 4,300 children and young people in Oxfordshire.

When meeting the team, Gener8 were able to see first-hand how SeeSaw help children, including learning more about the services they provide. Services included; grief support for younger family members, specialist support for the wider family, and group meets for children who have suffered loss.doogood

We were introduced to ‘Do Good’, a friendly golden retriever, and a key member of the SeeSaw team, who plays and supports the young children that they help. The team at SeeSaw, including Kathy Moore pictured right, along with Do Good, are often faced with difficult situations that families look to them for support. The team have over 15 years’ experience of helping young children in those critical moments that could have a positive effect on a child’s life now, and in the future.

As a registered charity, SeeSaw relies on its own fundraising for over 85% of its grief support costs. The cost of running the service is approximately £300,000 a year for which they depend on widespread support from individuals, local communities, businesses and trusts.

Gener8 Finance’s newly appointed Managing Director, Paul Stokes, is set to race in the 23rd edition of L’Etape Du Tour, on July 19th 2015 in the French Alps, in aid of charities; Help Harry Help Others and the Teenage Cancer Trust.

L’Etape Du Tour was established in 1993 to allow amateur cyclists, such as Paul, to test their legs on the route of one of the mountain stages of the Tour de France. This year’s 148 km course involves over 4000 vertical metres of climbing in anticipated temperatures of 30 degrees – an incredibly difficult challenge.

Beginning in Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne, the route will take Paul through many scenic locations, not that he will have much chance to take in the views, as he cycles up 4 legendary Tour De France climbs – Col Du Chaussy, Col De La Croix De Fer, Col Du Mollard, and finishing at Ta Toussuire.

When asked why he wanted to do the tour, Paul commented,“I have always loved watching the Tour De France, but the last bike I actually owned was a Raleigh Chopper back in the 1980s. The set-in of middle-aged spread sparked me into action and I saw taking part in a Tour De France stage as the ultimate inspiration to commit to a serious training regime.”

To prepare for the 142 kilometer stage, Paul has been training 5 days a week, with the help of cycle coach Tim Ramsden of Black Cat Cycling. Using a combination of high intensity indoor training and longer outdoor rides, Paul’s training stats include:

  • Losing over 2 stones in weight, burning in excess of 97,360 calories.
  • Over half a million pedal revolutions on the indoor Wattbike trainer.
  • 3800 + training miles

Having recently been out to France on a training ride, he is fairly confident that he has done sufficient training to get the job done.

Paul was keen to use a challenge of this magnitude to raise funds for charity. He asked his 2 boys Dylan (13) and Reece (10) to select the charities they wanted their dad to support. Paul says “I am proud of my boys that they chose Paul Stokes in training for the Tour De France mountain stagesnot 1 but 2 amazing causes for me to raise money for – Help Harry Help Others (www.hhho.org.uk), and Teenage Cancer Trust (www.teenagecancertrust.org)”.

Help Harry Help Others was started by the incredibly brave Harry Moseley, a young lad from Birmingham. Whilst battling an inoperable brain tumour himself, Harry was inspired to make a difference to all people with brain cancer, by raising money and awareness, making and selling his world-famous bracelets and organising nearly 100 events. Tragically, Harry died in 2011, aged just 11, but his legacy lives on and Paul is looking to raise as much money as possible in his memory.

Similarly, Stephen Sutton was an incredibly heroic young man who, before he died from cancer at just 19, raised millions for Teenage Cancer Trust. Famous for his indomitable spirit, characterised by his trademark “thumbs up”, Stephen’s bucket list of 46 things that he wanted to do before he died touched the nation.

Paul says about the charities “both Stephen Sutton and Harry Moseley were 2 very brave lads, and when I am having a tough time in training, their stories put everything into perspective and give me all the inspiration I need to keep going”.

Regular late payments from buyers is threatening the existence of businesses of all sizes, with smaller businesses most affected, according to the latest report from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).

The ACCA is the world’s leading body for professional accountants, with over 110 years of experience, innovation and excellence. They champion opportunity within accountancy, demonstrate excellence, and act as a driving force within the accounting sector to improve working practices.

During 2014, ACCA conducted a review of the widespread problem of late payments, which is a life-threatening challenge for many businesses. This review brought together research to identify potential solutions.

From the review, ACCA developed a series of reports to show how late payments are having a detrimental effect on businesses of all sizes. The papers, named Ending Late Payment (1, 2 & 3) suggests that ….”30% of payments made to businesses in the UK are outside of agreed terms – with between 16 and 21% not being made until more than 60 days after the initial service”. The report claims the prevalent culture of late payments is largely down to the lack of a financial infrastructure that can boost trade credit.

The research findings were split into three reports;

Ending Late Payment Part 1 – reviews the quantitative data from the ACCA surveys to define late payment and its impact on our economy.

Ending Late Payment Part 2 – reviews and brings together a spread of commissioned publications and secondary research to help define good practice.

Ending Late Payment Part 3 – provides a summary of the findings and most importantly recommends calls to action for Government, financial services and businesses.

Part 3, which is no doubt what we will all be looking at, depicts how businesses (referred to as suppliers in the report) can reduce the risk of late payments. In a snapshot, this includes:

  • Creating and building longer term relationships.
  • Aligning objectives between all parties.
  • Protection through due diligence.
  • Careful contract design and ensuring that credit policies are understood.
  • Exploring and securing alternative sources of finance such as factoring/invoice finance.
  • Distinguishing between late payment and genuine credit risk.

Working on the above aspects will indeed help resolve late payment issues, but the number one question on lenders lips is Why is invoice finance the last option they choose to help manage late payments and cash-flow?’.

Well, to understand why, look at the list and ask yourself what the common denominator is? You may be thinking that these are all about improving internal processes except for invoice finance. If you are, then you are part of the majority.

But, think of it like this, if you want to create longer term relationships in your business, you may already outsource your communications plan for a fee. The exactly the same can be said for using invoice finance – outsourcing this will become a way of managing your invoices, regulating cash-flow and ultimately avoiding the pitfalls outlined in the report.

So effectively, invoice finance is a way for businesses to regulate cash-flow and ensure late payments are avoided, just like using a communications agency to regulate relationships.
